The Pawsitive Benefits of Pets in the Workplace

Fish tanks have been keeping waiting areas calm for decades, service and therapy dogs have long-since proved their worth and now pups can even be found in the reading rooms of schools and nursing homes.

With more businesses embracing remote and flexible work arrangements, the idea of pets in the workplace continues to gain in popularity. They are no longer just the preserve of small, rural businesses either.  In this article, I’m shining a light on some of the reasons why taking animals to work… works!

Reduced Stress and Improved Mental Health

Pets have been shown to reduce stress levels in humans. Studies have shown employees who brought their dogs to work had lower levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress.  And whilst it’s more often dogs in the workplace, whether it's hearing a cat purr, ruffling a canary’s feathers, or tickling an iguana's tummy, the stress busting effects of creatures are not thought to be confined to one species.  The mental health benefits don't stop at stress reduction, either; pets in the workplace can improve morale, provide companionship, and reduce feelings of loneliness or isolation.

Increased Productivity and Collaboration

It’s no wonder pets in the workplace can also lead to increased productivity and collaboration.  Apart from anything, animals that need regular exercise necessitate their owners to take regular breaks from the desk. This in turn brings leg stretching, fresh air and new perspectives which are hugely beneficial, especially if teammates take short lunchtime walks together.

A report by the University of Lincoln revealed that employees who often take their dog to work report 22% higher satisfaction with their working conditions, while in a survey by Banfield Pet Hospital, 56% said it increased collaboration among colleagues.

Improved Work-Life Balance

Allowing pets in the workplace can also improve work-life balance for employees. Instead of worrying about rushing home to walk or feed their pets, employees can enjoy their company throughout the day. This can help reduce absenteeism and improve employee engagement and retention.

Enhanced Workplace Culture

Pets can bring a sense of joy to the workplace, creating a more relaxed and welcoming environment.  Research commissioned by Purina shows 81% of Brits believe pet-friendly workplaces are happier workplaces.  What is more, they often serve as a conversation starter, helping break down barriers between colleagues and animals can be a great equaliser and bring employees from different departments or levels of the organisation together.

Establishing Guidelines for Pets in the Workplace

Of course, there are some considerations to bear in mind when allowing pets into the workplace. Allergies and phobias are commonplace, and the distraction of dogs yapping when people are trying to make calls can be exasperating for some.  Gaining unanimous support for your decision and establishing clear guidelines and policies can therefore help ensure that everyone stays comfortable and safe. Such guidelines could be formal or informal and might include rules around pet behaviour, designated areas for pets, and cleaning requirements.

There's no denying that allowing pets in the workplace, when done right, can bring numerous benefits for employees as well as the company as a whole.

From reducing stress and improving morale to increasing productivity and enhancing workplace culture, the positive (pawsitive!) benefits of pets in the workplace are hard to ignore.

So why not consider welcoming pets onto your premises?  Those furry friends might just be the secret to a happier, more productive workforce.
